Annette Funicello had just turned 13 when Walt Disney, the studio's producer, was able to see her performing in the Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. The Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were angry after Funicello was added to her group later in the first season of the show and without having to audition. Disney proved to be correct when Funicello was The Mickey Mouse Club's most viewed performer. She also included as a character in Adventures in Dairyland, her storyline. It was soon clear that Funicello needed to make records so that she could maximize her talents as a teenage star, and while Annette was not a fan of her singing talent, Disney engaged established arranger Tutti Camerata to pilot her career as an artist on the recording. Funicello was comfortable recording records, and she loved working with Camerata. Camerata was among a handful of that were arranging at 40 who understood the fundamentals of rock's early days. Annette Sings Anka was the third album, and probably the first album to incorporate the music of rock singers as a part of the music repertoire. Funicello co-starred with Frankie Avalon in Beach Party. It was the very first in a sequence of beach parties films that were hugely well-known. The scripts for all of these films were given a personal read-through and approval by Walt Disney so as to ensure the image of Annette was protected.
