O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois, she graduated from the Wheaton North High School in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a financial planner) and Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High School in the year 1981. Before making the move from Illinois to Los Angeles, she appeared in several commercials. The career of O'Grady began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was then cast as a frequent role in the ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in a variety of series.
