O'Neil was a contestant on Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. Her vocal performance impressed the panel of judges and she was voted into the 100th round. Her performance was highly applauded by the judges. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the second lowest. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil was consistently giving stellar performances since then, always finished in the third place. The judge Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show after the 7th September finals in 2005. O'Neil received a call immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
